⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Envy
Age: Unknown, at least several centuries
Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist (manga/Brotherhood)
Canon Point: Post-series

Background: Here @ the FMA wiki

Personality: At first blush, Envy comes across as the most uncomplicated and crudest of Father's homunucli, save for Gluttony and Sloth. Envy has the excessive cruelty and grace of a schoolyard bully, just with superhuman powers and the ability and authority to execute their violent whims. Though Envy themselves is a genderless being, they commonly take the form of a young man with mandrake-like hair wearing a midriff-bearing outfit. However, even this default appearance is just a costume to Envy, which belies their deeply buried insecurity and revulsion towards themselves.

Most of the time, Envy behaves in a crass, almost-childish manner, speaking rudely to everyone except the few people they respect; a list which begins and ends with Lust and their Father. Even their fellow homunculi are not spared the bite of Envy's tongue, and again, they conduct such activities with all the grace of a schoolyard bully. One of Envy's absolute favorite targets is Edward Elric, who they waste no opportunity to insult for petty reasons.

Envy's cruelty goes beyond teasing, however. Simply put, Envy is a killer who relishes in taking human lives, and it goes beyond even that in the psychological warfare they choose to employ when doing so. This is shown when they took the form of an Amestrian soldier in order to kick-start the Ishvalan war; not only did they throw the region into chaos, they chose the form of a soldier who actually protested the occupation of the region, with Envy then reveling in how the man's life was destroyed. They also chose to take the form of Maes Hughes' wife when they killed him, an act which Envy fondly remembered later on when taunting Hughes' friend Roy Mustang about the deed. For Envy, it's not worth it to simply take a human being's life, but to make them and everyone else suffer greatly as a result of it.

While Envy is an effective infiltrator and saboteur, most of this is due to the fact that their ability to transform is so complete. Outside of all of that, while they might not necessarily be stupid, they are too easily prone to anger and impulsive behavior. Envy can also be extremely sloppy, and miss crucial details both when impersonating someone or when fighting. They do the latter extremely artlessly, with Envy attacking with all the grace and delicacy of a sledgehammer. This is due to the fact that their strength usually makes it unnecessary to fight skillfully, a fact which makes them extremely vulnerable when up against those who have the means to combat their overwhelming strength. Envy also has a hair-trigger temper, and will not hesitate to snap at those who earn their ire.

That being said, there is one venue where Envy shows great talent, and that's in being demoralizing. Envy has a particular talent for making speeches designed to break or push people over the edge of despair. They like to think they have a particular insight to the weakness of humans, but in actuality, Envy is just plain good at hurting people. This kind of behavior often comes in the form of pseudo-psychological and philosophical rants leveled at people who have already been worn down and demoralized, which makes them even more effective. Long story short: Envy is good at kicking people while they're down. Envy also derives pleasure from this, as shown when they thought their recounting of how they killed Hughes to be absolutely hilarious/

However, for all of Envy's condescension, brutality, and all-around-”brattyness”, it's all well worn armor to mask the self revulsion Envy feels. Much like how they are a literal parasite protected by armor made of twisted flesh, Envy's contempt of others and especially humanity are a mask to hide how much Envy hates themselves. Underneath it all, Envy knows how absolutely pathetic they truly are, and employs all of their twisted, violent tactics as a means of hiding this fact. In particular, they hate being looked down on, because it reminds Envy how truly ugly they really are, whether it be physical or as a person. Envy is the true personification of their name, as they are intensely jealous of our ability to trust others and improve, and thus, they do everything in their power to drag others down to their level. They also hate being seen as "ugly", even being reluctant to show their more monstrous form, as it too is a reminder of how different they are from what Envy believes they will never be.

Do not mistake Envy's pitiable nature for deeply buried goodness, however. Envy is the personification of a sin, of a vice, and it it would take something extraordinary for them to change for the better. Even if the series shows homunculi can change, that's very far beyond where Envy is now. After all, when Envy was confronted on its true motivations, their first response was to show anger at being exposed rather than remorse for everything they had done. As such, it is highly unlikely Envy will make an effort to change, even after being brought back from their own self-inflicted end.

Abilities: In coming into the game, Envy will be restored to the physical state they were in prior to being assaulted and defeated by Tim Marcoh.

Envy's most notable ability is their ability to change their appearance. This comes with all that you might expect; they can become shorter, taller, more muscular, and basically become an exact duplicate of anyone, provided that Envy is themselves aware of those physical features. Sometimes they can leave traits out, but this is bound by the fact that Envy can sometimes be overeager and sloppy. However, Envy cannot change their mass, so no matter what form they take, Envy will always weigh as much as their monstrous form does, just with the mass compressed into the current shape and size they've taken on. That being said, this does allow Envy to use their shape-shifting for more than just mimicking appearances, using this extra mass to fashion parts of their body into weapons the humans they mimic don't possess.

In their monstrous form, Envy primarily relies on their horrifying appearance and monstrous strength. The form possesses an additional pair of forelimbs, all four of which can be used to grab and manipulate objects in addition to serving as legs. Both their limbs and their jaws have the power to crush rock and bone, and they can also use their ability to shape-shift their body to enlarge or elongate certain parts like their tongue. Finally, their body is covered in a mass of constantly twisting and convulsing faces; these faces are those of the souls of the people of Xerxes that Father used to create Envy's Philosopher's Stone, and they are constantly in agony. Every time Envy changes form, they are using the power of one of these souls to do so. These souls are also used to resurrect Envy and heal injuries. However, there's a limit to the amount of regeneration their stone can provide, and rapid and repeated injury can cause it to quickly exhaust its supply of souls.

In the event Envy's stone is depleted of a massive amount of energy or damaged to the point it's impossible to heal themselves without risking their stone's destruction, Envy's body breaks down, revealing their true form; the larger, shape-changing body is nothing but a mass of flesh and extension of the true, parasitic Envy within, who resembles a small green lizard with a sideways mouth. This form is a parasite, and can forcibly assimilate other homunculi and their stones into creating a body for themselves. However, this form is incredibly weak, and can easily be killed by a normal human being. Even this has a hidden danger, however, as Envy can also assimilate the body of a human, though their weakened state makes them highly vulnerable in doing so. For that matter, Envy is quite reluctant to do so given their extreme hatred and jealousy of humans.

Other: A note about pronoun usage.

First Person Sample: Here

Third Person Sample: "I'm... I'm alive...?"

Envy had more or less said those words before, back when they'd used those mannequin soldiers to recreate their larger body and come back from being stuck as a pitiful little parasite. This time however, the words were not spoken with the same unbridled joy and elation, but rather absolute shock. But that was to be expected when one had ripped out what was effectively their own heart and quite literally crumbled to dust.

How the hell were they even alive again?

Envy grit their teeth, flexing their hands as if trying to make sure they were real. That this wasn't some kind of awful trick or illusion or maybe even a dying hallucination. They didn't know what happened when one died (for real anyway, Envy had died superficially plenty of times), after all, maybe this was one final joke life was playing on him.

But no. It didn't feel like a dream. Not that they knew what real dreams were even like. Envy didn't feel disconnected from their body, or like there was some kind of illusion going on, and when they concentrated, they could feel the mass of teeming, tortured souls screaming about in their philosopher's stone. The stone which should be broken.

They weren't just alive, either. They were whole again... more whole than they'd felt since that bastard Marcoh had caused them to reveal their true form. Envy could feel the weight and power they remembered losing twice now, once to that pathetic doctor and again to that wretch, Mustang. Who had done this? Their Father? No... This didn't feel like his work, and Envy doubted that Father would even think to bring him back after the way they'd failed.

... For some reason, they'd been given a second chance. Envy didn't know by who, or what power this had happened, but it was clear... something had conspired to restore them to life.

A second chance. To change things. To make... to make those lowly humans suffer greater than ever before. Envy's lips twisted into a manic smirk as they considered the possibilities! Those wretched humans... they'd see Envy at their ugliest and most exposed. Laid every single one of their fears and insecurities bare, rejected their attempts to show them how pathetic they'd are, driven them- no, tricked them into taking their own life instead of being mocked. Yes. Yes yes yes! That would all be made up for! That would all be paid back a thousandfold!

As these thoughts raced through Envy's mind, the homunculus brought their hands to their forehead and began to laugh. It would be glorious! Ishval would pale in comparison for what Envy had in store for the world! This... This would be their second chance, and they were determined not to let it go to waste.
